The AP World History geography quiz — all 89 physical geography markers

Ninety-nine percent of AP World History review is names, dates and causes. This is the other one percent: the map itself. The quiz below covers all 89 physical-geography markers the course expects you to know — oceans, seas, rivers, mountain ranges, deserts — as a tap-the-map quiz you can run as many times as you want. No daily lock, no timer, no sign-up, and it’s free.

What’s actually being tested

This isn’t the daily round’s country-name quiz wearing a different label. It’s a separate level, built specifically for AP World History physical geography — the water bodies, rivers, mountain ranges and deserts that show up on the exam’s map questions and get the least classroom time, because most of a course is spent on the parts that aren’t shaped like a map.

A marker appears by name — “the Gulf of Aden,” “the Aral Sea,” “the Deccan Plateau” — and you tap where it is. No multiple choice, so there’s nowhere to guess your way through using elimination. Two tries: 3 points on the first tap, 2 on the second, then the answer is shown before the quiz moves on.

Four categories

You can run the full set or narrow it to one category. Whichever you pick, the round is exactly that category:

Deserts is the shortest round on the site and All is the longest.

Locations are approximate

A country has borders. A desert doesn’t, and neither does a mountain range or most of a sea. The quiz places each of these as an area rather than a point, and where a location is inherently fuzzy, the quiz says so rather than pretending to a precision the geography doesn’t have. A tap anywhere inside that area counts — this is an AP World History map quiz about knowing roughly where the Gobi is, not about hitting an exact coordinate.

This quiz app was created specifically as a study guide for an AP World History geography quiz.

Practice however you use it

Run the whole set start to finish, or drill one category the morning of a test. Nothing here is timed and nothing locks after one attempt — the daily geography game on the rest of this site has a one-shot rule because a shared daily result is the point of it. Come back to it as many times as the exam calendar demands. This is AP World History geography practice built to be rerun, not sat through once.

It’s part of Globe Rivals, a free geography game built on the same tap-the-map mechanic — the daily round covers modern countries and a few historical maps, and this quiz is the physical-geography half of the same idea, aimed specifically at AP World History.
