Bungee jumping was invented in Vanuatu, without the bungee. On Pentecost Island, men have long jumped from wooden towers up to 30 meters high with only vines tied to their ankles, aiming to just brush the ground. A New Zealander watched it in the 1950s, and the modern sport followed.
