Lake Issyk-Kul sits high in the Kyrgyz mountains surrounded by snow, and it never freezes. A combination of slight salinity, great depth and geothermal activity keeps it liquid year round. Its name means warm lake, and Soviet authorities once used it to test torpedoes in secret.
