Crazy but True
The city of Petra was carved into rose colored cliffs over 2,000 years ago and then effectively lost to the outside world for centuries. A Swiss explorer disguised himself as a pilgrim in 1812 to talk local Bedouin into leading him there. Most of the site is still unexcavated.
