Crazy but True
A crater in the Turkmen desert has been on fire since 1971. Soviet engineers drilling for gas collapsed the ground, and to burn off escaping methane they set it alight, expecting it to go out in weeks. It has burned continuously ever since and is known as the Door to Hell.
