Algeria became the largest country in Africa overnight in 2011, without changing size at all. Sudan had held the title until South Sudan split away, and Algeria inherited it by default. Roughly 80 percent of Algeria is Sahara desert, and almost the entire population lives along a narrow coastal strip.
